Pros:
  • Strong engine lineup, unmatched off-road ability, balanced handling, long list of advanced safety equipment, solid warranty.
Cons:
  • Hard plastic interior surfaces could use some padding, less cargo capacity than most midsize SUVs.

I have owned my Jeep for almost a year now and I have been very impressed. I owned 88 and 98 Cherokees before this and have loved them all, but this one is the best. I have driven the thing into the ground putting almost 23,000 miles in the first year. One of the best things I like is its towing ability. I moved from Virginia to California pulling a trailer and load of about 4700lbs. I was quite unsure of how it would do but to my surprise it performed great. I have the tow package. The gearing and transmission performance in the tow haul setting was great, even in cruise control. I was able to maintain the speed limit in all areas except some mountains. I was still able to maintain at least 55 there.

Wow! I was surprised at so many negative reviews I felt I had to share my experience. I am the original owner of my Jeep and currently have 88K miles. I have had no signifigant problems. At about 85K the liftgate has started to not stay in the up position but the parts online are under $100 and we plan to fix this. We have also had the plastic break a bit on the rear doors behind the handle but I think this could also be due to my kids hanging on it. Again that was over 80K miles. Mechanically it has been great. have the Nav and it has been great to. I have loved it so much that I have decided to buy a Commander since we are outgrowing this. I love it

In 2006 we bought an 05 Laredo (18K mi) because we needed a bigger car after having 2nd baby. I had to have it, always wanted a Jeep Cherokee. Not 10 months later transmission had to be rebuilt. 10 months later again, transmission had to be replaced. Both times under warranty, but I have a feeling work was already done, before we got it. 1 year later we are having same problem: leaking fluid and starting to shift hard, taking it in for third time in less than 3 years. Never ever buying a Jeep again, for that matter any Chrysler-Daimler make.

Looks good, and is comfortable. The gas mileage is poor (I had the 4.7l in my previous one, which got 2 mpg better); head clearance is awful if youre 59" or above, and to make matters worse they removed the 6-way power seat and put in a 4-way so that you cant lower the seat height. The four wheel drive is suspect (I have gotten it stuck twice already). Jeep has sacrificed little comforts also such as removing the sun visor extensions which is annoying, but that "trail rated" badge sure is nifty. Forget changing your own oil, or doing other "minor repairs" unless you have a garage with a lift, and a degree from MIT. Somewhere jeep has lost its identity to the soccer moms. Good luck.

Got the Jeep with 75k on it; looked great and ran well until 80 k. Replaced struts, radiator, tune up( 16 plugs!) Trans now jumps into 3rd gear all the time-dealer has no idea what the problem is. Dash lights continually flash , not a bad car but expected more from jeeps flagship. Update; This jeep HAD to have been built on a Monday morning by the hungover or still drunk workers from the law. Too many gremlins and expensive fixes to mention. Will never look at another Chrysler product in my life. terrible....just terrible.

  • Great Vehicle, But - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is the best on/off road vehicle I have ever driven. I also own a 2002 and it does not begin to perform like the 2005. The problem I have is that this vehicle needs at least 2 to 3 more inches of ground clearance to make it the leader of all off road vehicles.

  • Oh the gas mileage... - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Got the Hemi, because for $1,200 it is a no-brainer. But man is the gas mileage awful. Quick for a vehicle this size. Interior redesign is well thought out. Ride quality is good...the thing is UNBELIEVABLE in the snow - better than expected. For the price, it is the best buy in its market segment.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee: 1. Intermittent Problem: engine fails to crank (happens daily). Tries to turn over but will not. Acts like battery is weak. After waiting and repeatedly trying engine will start, showing no signs of any problem. 2. Intermittent Problem: A/C cuts off and will only work if fan speed setting is changed to high. A/C cuts off repeatedly while driving. 3. Check engine light (orange engine symbol) comes on anytime fuel gauge reaches the ΒΌ tank level. When light comes on the engine sputters and misses for several minutes. This light will not come on until the fuel tank is filled. 4. When starting engine with A/C on it takes over 30 seconds for air to blow out of the dash

We bought the 2005 Laredo 4x4 with a V8 engine. The gas cost is unbelievable! I didnt think it would be this bad. I cant seem to get the mpg up to more than 14.7. Otherwise, the car is fun to drive and handles well. Its very roomy and comfortable.

  • Glad its gone - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought the Jeep new in Dec of 04 at a great price, and after 2 1/2 years of owning it we figured out why. Build quality is the poorest of any vehicle I have owned. The V6 is so underpowered it was almost scary at times, merging onto highways was not fun. The tranny wouldnt down shift as needed to keep the RPMs and torque up. Blind spots everywhere, seats stain with rain water or condensation off a water bottle, jittery / uncomfortable ride, no room in the back seats, I could go on but there is limited space left. Traded it on an 08 Pathfinder SE V6 with twice the power.
